In this section, we’re going to take a more detailed look at the early life of Iron Mike Tyson.
Michael Gerard Tyson was born on the 30th of June, 1966, in Brownsville, New York.
He has an older brother and sadly used to have a sister, who passed away due to a heart attack in 1990 when she was just 24 years of age.
When Mike was 16 years of age, his mother died, leaving him in the care of a boxing manager by the name of Cus D’Amato, he was also a trainer.
Mike grew up in rough areas with high rates of crime, and he too was a self-confessed ‘wild kid’ who would often get up to no good, get into fights, and find himself in trouble with the law.
Aged 13, he had been arrested 38 times.
Because Mike had a lisp and somewhat of a high pitched voice, other kids would often mock him, and Mike would respond by attacking them and getting into fights.
Mike always had that Pitbull attitude as it didn’t matter how big or how much older his opponent was, he would always keep coming.
At a young age, his talent for boxing was obvious and he was discovered by a counselor by the name of Bobby Stewart, who himself was a former boxer.
Amateur Career And Rise To Stardom:
Mike got into boxing and in 1981 and 1982 at the Junior Olympics, he won gold medals, defeating Joe Cortex in 81, and Kelton Brown in 82.
In 1985, aged just 18 years of age, Tyson made his pro debut, where he won his very first fight as a pro via a first-round TKO.
He won 26 out of his first 28 fights either by KO or TKO, with 16 of these wins actually coming in the very first round.
February 16th, 1986 was an eventful day for Mike, as this was the date that his very first televised boxing match was broadcast on-air via ABC Sports.
He fought journeyman Jesse Ferguson, a heavyweight boxer whom Mike knocked down with an uppercut in the 5th round, breaking Ferguson’s nose in the process.
Ferguson would then go on to repeated clinch Mike in the sixth, refusing to let go, and was subsequently disqualified by the referee.
This was somewhat controversial as ending the fight via DQ would end Mike’s consecutive strong knockouts and the victory was adjusted to a TKO.
Mike would go on to fight numerous times over the years, including taking on fighters such as Trevor
Berbick and Marvis Frazier.
By the late 80s, Mike was now a very capable boxer and was seen as a future world champ.
He would go on to win numerous world heavyweight championship belts.
He fought fighters such as Tony Tubbs, Michael Spinks, and Larry Holmes.
When he fought Spinks, the fight was, at the time, a record-setting fight in terms of pay-per-view buys and many predicted the fight to go the distance.
With Tyson’s aggressive attacking style, and Spinks’ footwork and precision, experts predicted a boxing clinic.
They were wrong.
In the first 90 seconds, Mike knocked out Spinks in one of the greatest moments in boxing history.
Many boxing fans consider that 91 second knockout of Spinks to be the pinnacle of Tyson’s boxing career.
Sadly, when people remember Mike in the ring, they often remember him for a different and far less favorable reason.
Troubles Outside The Ring:
In the ring, Mike was known for his intense and aggressive style of fighting. Outside of the ring, his personal life was following suit.
Mike’s marriage to Robin Givens was on the verge of collapsing and ending in divorce, and he found himself unsettled by contract negotiations and changes in his camp and management.
Soon after Kevin Rooney, whom many considered to be the key to Mike’s success, critics noticed that he lost a step or two in the ring and that his head movement and fighting style suffered.
He was nearly beaten by Frank Bruno, and in 1990, amid a chaotic personal life, he gained weight in the form of body fat, looked out of shape compared with his usual granite muscular physique, and he was reportedly not taking his training seriously for an upcoming bout against Buster Douglas.
In early 1990, in Tokyo, Mike lost the undisputed title to Douglas, despite being an enormous favorite with the bookies.
Mike was outboxed, though he did uppercut Douglas in the 8th to put him on the canvas, he was able to recover sufficiently and continue to outbox Tyson.
Tyson was known as the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ and when Douglas knocked him down for the first time in his career, this victory over Tyson is still considered one of boxing’s most shocking moments, and a monumental upset.
Tyson would come back strong after the loss to Douglas and would win his next two fights.
Tyson, now number one contender for the belt, faced number 2 contender Donovan ‘Razor’ Ruddock who was considered a real threat to Tyson.
The ref controversially stopped the fight in the 7th, in favor of Tyson, and the fans were not happy at all.
This sparked a post-match brawl by the fans and the ref had to be escorted from the ring for his own safety.
The two met again, and Tyson made sure he put Ruddock away properly the next time.
Tyson was now scheduled to face the champ, Evander Holyfield, though Tyson was forced to pull out of the fight after breaking a rib. A broken rib, though, was the least of his worries.
In 1991, Tyson was arrested and incarcerated for the rape of Desiree Washington, who was just 18 years of age.
Tyson denied the charges and claimed that Washington gave consent, though he was found guilty and convicted of rape in Feb 1992.
He was sentenced to six years in prison, and although he was 25 at the time, he was incarcerated in a youth detention center where he served just under three years.
Under federal law, because of his conviction, Mike is forced to register as a sex offender.
After being released from jail, Mike had a new outlook on life and began training and working out harder than ever.
He won his comeback fights and went on to finally face Evander Holyfield.
Tyson lost to Holyfield, despite his camp complaining that Evander was headbutting him.
The two-faced one another again in 1997 in a rematch, in which there was some serious bad blood between the pair.
In one of the most shocking moments in sporting history, Mike actually bit a large chunk out of Evander’s ear in the 3rd round and was disqualified.
Tyson stated that this was payback for the unpunished headbutts Evander gave him in their first fight.
Tyson would go on to fight until 2005, winning and losing fights, as well as being imprisoned for assaulting two motorists.
His career now winding down, Tyson pursued other ventures outside of the ring.
In early 1998, Mike Tyson appeared on TV on Monday Night Raw for the then WWF (now WWE) in which he was apparently an enforcer for DX in the lead up to Stone Cold going against Shawn Michaels for the title at Wrestlemania XIV.
At Wrestlemania, in one of wrestling’s most iconic moments, Tyson turned on DX and knocked Shawn out in the ring, allowing Stone Cold to win the title.
He earned $3 Million for being a guest enforcer, which is another reason why the Mike Tyson net worth info you learn about today, is so impressive.
Tyson appeared for the WWE more than a decade later, knocking out Chris Jericho.
In the late spring of 2020, Mike appeared for Tony Kahn’s AEW wrestling promotion, and entered into a feud with ‘Le Champion’ Chris Jericho, and his stable ‘The Inner Circle’.
Seeds were planted for an upcoming match which, if it happens, will make Mike some serious green.
