As a youth, fuelled by racial tension after the murder of Emmett Till, Clay Jnr began acting out and took up the petty crime.
He encountered Louisville police officer Joe. E. Martin, who was also a part-time boxing coach.
Martin convinced Clay to channel his anger and frustration through boxing.
He decided to give boxing a shot after watching amateur fighters on the TV, and he began training.
In 1954 he made his amateur boxing debut.
He won via split decision.
After that, he would go on to win six Golden Gloves titles in Kentucky, as well as two nationally.
He even won gold in the 1960 summer Olympics in Rome.
Shortly afterward Clay turned pro. He debuted successfully in 1960.
In 3 years, he won 19 fights and lost 0. During these fights, Ali would verbally assault his opponents and trash talk them.
In 63, Clay was the top contender for Sonny Liston’s World Title.
The build-up to the fight was amazing. Clay would trash talk Liston, who was a physically imposing boxer with a history of violence, a criminal record, and alleged ties to the mob.
When they fought, Liston rushed Clay, seemingly angry.
Clay was too quick and agile and Liston looked foolish and amateur.
Clay rocked Liston in the 3rd and cut his eye.
This was the first cut Liston had ever sustained.
Clay dominated much of the fight and the bout was stopped at the end of the 6th.
Life After The Liston Fight
After the Liston fight, Clay converted to Islam and changed his name to Cassius X, before again changing it to Muhammad Ali.
Shortly after, a rematch was set in which Ali won by knockout, in less than three minutes.
In 1966, Ali refused to be drafted into the US armed forces to fight in the Vietnam War.
He was stripped of his boxing license and passport and he became an activist, motivational speaker, and actively opposed the war.
In 1970, after a four-year absence, Ali returned to boxing.
He went on to have some iconic bouts against the likes of Henry Cooper, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman.
Sadly, in 1982, Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and was forced to retire from the sport he loved.
He passed away on June 3rd, 2016, aged 74.
